A History of Betfred

Betfred has only been a household name since the start of the noughties, but the brand has a very rich history. Read on to find out more about the history of Betfred bookmakers.

Betfred started in 1967, from a single bookie shop based in Salford.

Brothers Fred and Peter Done placed a bet on England to win the World Cup a year before. Fred had previous experience in the gambling industry, working as a 'runner' and collecting bets from customers.

The brothers decided to set up their very own betting shop with the money they won – Done Bookmakers.

If you're curious - 'Done' rhymes with 'bone'!

In 1997, thirty years later, Done Bookmakers bought out the Robert Walker chain of bookmakers, meaning they now had 100 betting shops! The brand quickly grew, buying out the Demmy Racing Group in 1999. Done Bookmakers had doubled its stores by the turn of the new century and had expanded its reach across the UK.

The business rebranded in 2004, becoming Betfred. The company was one of the first to offer an online betting experience, letting punters not only bet on sports but also play poker, lotto and other games too.

Betfred is responsible for many firsts in the betting industry. They were the first betting brand to pay out early on a bet, the first to offer the Lucky 15, as well as create the first betting shop millionaire.

They were also one of the first bookies to have their own television channel – Betfred TV. As well as discussing the latest stats and games, Fred Done has his own twice-weekly show where he offers boosted odds.

In 2011, Betfred won the auction to buy The Tote – the Government-owned betting operation, in a deal worth £265 million. Betfred took the opportunity to invest more money into horse racing, as well as creating the Tote Racing Development Board.

Betfred and Sponsorship

What sports teams does Betfred sponsor? Find out how Betfred helps support different sports across the country.

Betfred is one of the most active sports sponsors in the UK, supporting not only football teams but other sports too.

The bookies sponsor many horse races, including the Midlands National run at Uttoxeter, the Ebor Handicap at York and the Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket. Betfred has also previously sponsored the Group One Sprint Cup and Haydock Park and the jumps race at the Cheltenham Gold Cup. It is also the official bookmaker of Ascot and Royal Ascot.

Until October 2021, Betfred sponsored the rugby Super League, and was the official partner of Manchester United from 2006 to 2013. In addition, Betfred sponsored the World Snooker Championship between 2009 and 2012, renewing their sponsorship in 2015.

Other events Betfred sponsors include the World Matchplay Darts and the British Masters.

In 2019, Betfred made its very first sponsorship deal outside of the UK, with RCD Mallorca.

Why Visiting the Bookies is Such a Different Experience

We'll let you know these opening times later on in this article.

How Many Betfred Bookies Are There in the UK?

How many branches of Betfred are there in England, Scotland and Wales, and how can you find your nearest bookies?

According to the Betfred website, there are currently 1,470 branches across the country. Not bad considering Betfred started over 50 years ago with just one store!

While Betfred is not the largest brand in the UK, you can still find branches all across the country. This means that no matter where you are, you'll be able to find a nearby branch of Betfred that's close to your home or place of work.

Betfred stores (or Licensed Betting Offices – LBOs – as Betfred calls them) can also be found near football stadiums and horse racing venues.

You can find your nearest Betfred store by going to the Betfred website or mobile app, and entering your postcode.

Betfred Opening Hours Today

If you're looking for an answer to the question: "What are Betfred's opening hours today?" this is the information you need.

As with all bookmakers, Betfred's opening hours can vary from store to store.

On a weekday (Monday to Friday), most Betfred branches open between 8am and 8.30am. This gives you plenty of time to pop in and place your bets for the day before you go to work.

Betfred bookies don't close for lunch. This means that you can pop in during your lunch break to watch the horse racing, check out the latest offers or place your bets for the day.

Closing times for Betfred stores on a weekday can vary, but not by a lot. Most stores close late a 10pm, meaning that you can pop in after you've had your tea or watched your favourite TV show.

However, a small proportion of stores close at 9pm or 9.30pm. This means that you need to be sure not to leave it too late; otherwise you may miss out on placing a bet that will make you a lot of money!

Why Do Betfred Opening Hours Vary so Much?

Why do Betfred opening and closing hours vary depending on where you are in the country? Let's take a look at some of the reasons why that is.

Opening hours for Betfred stores aren't randomly chosen. When a new branch opens, someone from Betfred Head Office will conduct detailed research to see where the new store is, what local amenities are nearby and how much footfall the store will get. This will help them work out what the opening hours should be.

As an example, a quiet branch of Betfred in a rural location will have shorter opening hours than one in a busy city centre.

Another thing that may have an impact is the local council. In 2005, The Gambling Act made local authorities responsible for licensing premises, resulting in minor variations in different regions of the UK.

The good news is that most Betfred stores are open for at least ten hours, so you still have lots of time to go in and place your bets.

Betfred Opening Hours on a Saturday

Looking to place a bet at the weekend? You'll need to know the Saturday and Sunday opening times of your local Betfred branch.

Most Betfred bookies have the exact opening times on a Saturday as they do on the weekend. This means you have plenty of time to place a bet before meeting your friends at your local pub or going to the football match.

There can be some slight variations though – for example, some Betfred stores may open half an hour later or close half an hour earlier. We always recommend checking the Betfred website or mobile app. Alternatively, you can contact your local store and ask them when they are open until.

Betfred Opening Hours on a Sunday

Want to place a bet on a Sunday? Here's how you can find out Betfred's opening hours on the very last day of the weekend.

Bookies have only been allowed to open on Sundays for just under thirty years. The Gaming and Betting Act in 1961 meant bookies could have their own stores for the first time. Before then, they were only allowed to operate in sports stadiums. Some bookmakers got around this by employing 'runners' who would go to local pubs and offices to collect bets from people.

In 1961, bookmakers could operate in stores, but they were legally required to close on a Sunday, alongside shops and supermarkets. In 1994, the law changed, meaning that bookmakers could open up on a Sunday for the first time ever.

So, what Sunday opening hours does Betfred operate on? Like all other bookmakers, Betfred has reduced opening hours on Sunday, with opening and closing times varying between different branches. Opening times can be between 9am and 10am, with closing times being between 8pm and 9pm.

A quick call before you go out will make sure you don't experience a wasted trip.

Betfred Opening Hours on a Bank Holiday

Are branches of Betfred open on bank holidays like Christmas and Boxing Day? Find out what the answer is below.

Betfred's opening hours depend on the bank holiday. The good news is that Betfred bookmakers are open on the majority of bank holidays. This is because most bank holidays have a lot of sporting events on. However, bear in mind that bookies may operate on reduced opening hours, so be sure to check ahead.

The only exception is Christmas Day on the 25 December, where all Betfred shops are closed, and all staff can enjoy a lovely, relaxing day off with loved ones.
