Do People Still Visit the Bookies?

Suppose you don’t know whether to visit your local Coral bookies or place a bet online. In that case, there are a lot of advantages to going to your nearest bookmakers!

With the rise of online gambling, you may wonder if people go to their local Coral bookies anymore. However, you would be pleasantly surprised!

Even though online betting has risen to prominence over the last twenty years, many people from all walks of life still like to take a trip to their local bookies.

Going to the local bookmakers is a fantastic way to socialise with friends, get the latest betting odds from staff and watch the horse race or football match live. You can even get a free cup of coffee or tea too!

Visiting the bookies is still popular with the older generation, people who like to pay for their bets with cash and those who live on their own. Sometimes getting the bus into town and going to place a few bets is the only time people get to socialise with others.

If you’re keen to visit your local Coral bookies, you’ll want to know its opening hours, so you don’t get there only to find it’s closed. We’ll let you know what these opening times are later on in this article.

A History of Coral Bookies

Coral is one of the oldest bookies that are still around, with a very fascinating history! It’s now the third-largest bookies in the UK, with an impressive market share of about 20%. Let’s find out more about how this particular brand of bookmakers came into being.

Coral was named for its founder Joe Coral, who was born in 1904. Originally called Joseph Kagarlitsky, he was born into a Jewish family in Poland. The Kagarlisky family moved to London when Joe was young and changed their surname to Coral.

Joe grew up with a natural aptitude for maths, working as a clerk after leaving school at 14. He also had a part-time job as a ‘runner’ – a person who takes bets on behalf of a bookmaker.

At the time, betting was only legal at horse races, which excluded all but the most wealthy people from gambling. As a result, many bookmakers operated illegally, getting runners to go round town to collect money and give people their winnings.

Joe eventually got fired from his job as a clerk as he had started to focus too much of his time on his job as a runner.

After a short break working in advertising, Joe went back to the world of bookmaking. Greyhound racing became a sport in 1926, meaning that many working-class people could now gamble legally. Joe took advantage of this in order to launch his own bookmaking company – Coral. Joe’s initial base of operations was a local pool hall, and then he moved to the former Haringey stadium in North London.

The Coral empire grew and grew, with the first licensed bookies store opening in 1962 after in-store betting became legal the year before. Joe initially wasn’t keen on opening stores, but he changed his mind after seeing how people from all walks of life wanted to place bets in them.

Coral merged with Mark Lane bookmakers in 1971, expanding its presence in the London area. The business also started to diversify, moving into the hospitality industry as well as purchasing bingo halls, squash clubs and casinos. By the end of the 1970s, Coral had 650 shops across the UK and in 1981, the company was acquired by Bass.

Joe Coral died in 1996, but the business continued to grow. In 1997, Ladbrokes tried to buy out Coral, but the deal was vetoed by the UK Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Ladbrokes tried to buy Coral for the second time in 2016 and was successful.

Both companies are now officially known as ‘Ladbrokes Coral,’ although they both still operate under their respective names.

Other things that Coral is well known for is being one of the first betting companies to have an online website, as well as its own TV channel – Coral TV.

How Many Coral Bookies Are There in the UK?

How many branches of Coral are in the country, and how can you find your nearest bookmaker?

There are 1,700 Coral bookies across the UK, making it the third-largest bookies in the country behind William Hill and Ladbrokes. It’s definitely come a long way since the 1970s when it had about 650 shops!

There used to be more Coral Bookies, but the brand lost about 300 stores in 2016. This is because when Ladbrokes bought Coral, senior management did an audit to make sure Ladbrokes and Coral stores would not be in direct competition with each other. Some stores were then sold to other bookmakers like Betfred.

As there are 1,700 stores, this means that wherever you are in the country, you’ll be able to find a local branch of Coral near your home or place of work.

You can find your nearest branch by going on the Coral website and entering your postcode.

Coral Opening Hours Today

Want to find out Coral’s opening hours today? Let’s take a look at when Coral opens and closes.

Coral’s opening hours can vary depending on the store you want to visit.

On a weekday (between Monday and Friday), most Coral stores open between 7am and 9am. This means that you have plenty of time to pop in and place a bet before you go to work.

Most Coral stores close at 10pm, meaning you have lots of time to go in after work finishes, or you’ve put the kids to bed. Some stores do close earlier though, so be sure to check before you head out in order to avoid a wasted trip.

Coral Opening Hours on a Saturday

If you want to place a bet at the weekend, how do you go about it? Here are Coral’s opening hours for a Saturday.

The majority of Coral bookies have the same opening times on a Saturday as they do on a weekday (Monday to Friday). This means if you are popping into town to do your shopping, meeting friends at the pub or going to the football, you can place a bet on the way.

Remember that there may be some slight variations in store opening hours. We recommend calling your local Coral or checking the website to be on the safe side.

Coral Opening Hours on a Sunday

Need to place a bet on a Sunday? Here’s how you can find out Coral opening hours on the last day of the weekend.

Most Coral bookmakers have reduced opening hours on a Sunday. This is because not many people go out to place bets on a Sunday. As with other days, opening times on a Sunday can differ between branches. Opening times can vary between 9am and 10am, and closing times can vary between 8pm and 9pm.

As mentioned before, we advise checking before you head out in order to avoid a wasted visit.

Did you know that bookies only started opening on a Sunday in 1994? The Gaming and Betting Act in 1961 meant that bookies were allowed to operate in stores for the very first time. However, they were legally required to close on a Sunday. This wasn’t something that was just restricted to betting shops though. The majority of shops and supermarkets weren’t allowed to open on Sundays.

In 1994, bookmakers were finally allowed to open on a Sunday. This was the year that the UK National Lottery launched, meaning that people could go into their local bookies to get their tickets!

Coral Opening Hours on a Bank Holiday

Are bookies allowed to open on a bank holiday? Find out what the answer is, and how bank holidays affect opening hours at Coral.

There are eight bank holidays a year in England and Wales, ten in Northern Ireland and nine in Scotland. The good news is that Coral bookmakers are open on the majority of bank holidays.

The only exception is Christmas Day (25th December), where all the shops are closed, and all Coral staff can enjoy a relaxing day off with their families.

Major bank holidays like Boxing Day and New Year’s Day typically have a lot of sporting events on. This means most bookies open up so people can come along and place their bets. Opening hours may be reduced or similar to Sunday opening times.

Exact dates and opening times can vary, so please double-check before you head out.

Why Do Coral Opening Hours Vary?

Why do some Coral stores open at 8am and some open at 10am? Here are some of the reasons why this may be the case.

Opening hours ultimately depend on the location of the individual bookies and how much footfall they get. For example, a busy Coral in a lively town centre near a football stadium will be open for longer than a quiet Coral in a small village.

In 2005, The Gambling Act made local councils responsible for licensing premises where gambling takes place, including betting stores. This means that individual bookmakers must liaise with their local councils, which may result in minor variations in opening hours from town to town.

The majority of Coral betting stores are open for at least ten hours a day, which still means you have plenty of time to get your bets on.
